Presented by Dr. Amber Davisson (Communication & Philosophy Dept): From Marilyn
Monroe's Playboy centerfold and topless photos of Jaqueline
Kennedy Onassis to the Kim Kardashian sex tape and tabloid stories of Britney
Spears going commando, the scandal of celebrity nudity has long captivated the
public. Celebrity scandals are morality plays that work to communicate the
values and principles of conduct for the larger society. Historically, the
scandal of female celebrity nudity has been told as a story of prominent women
whose reputations were destroyed because they failed to maintain self-control.
This presentation revisits that history and asks: What if we have been telling
the story wrong? What if all of this is actually nonconsensual
pornography?
